Even if you want to grow your own food on your own land, it isn't your land, but the government' s land. When you bought the land, all you bought was the exclusive right to rent the land from the government by paying "taxes" each year. If you have to pay something every so often or you can be thrown off your land, that's rent no matter what you want to call it. There's a great article about this whole situation.
